X CEO Linda Yaccarino has responded to the explicit comments made by X owner and CTO Elon Musk during a recent interview with CNBC’s Andrew Ross Sorkin. Musk, in an interview at the 2023 DealBook Summit, used strong language to express his stance against advertisers attempting to influence him financially.
In her statement on X, Yaccarino characterized Musk’s comments as an “explicit point of view about our position” and highlighted X’s role as a platform that allows users to make their own decisions. She emphasized that X stands at the intersection of Free Speech and Main Street, with a powerful community ready to welcome users.
“We’re a platform that allows people to make their own decisions. And here’s my perspective when it comes to advertising: X is standing at a unique and amazing intersection of Free Speech and Main Street — and the X community is powerful and is here to welcome you. To our partners who believe in our meaningful work — Thank You,” wrote Yaccarino on X.
Elon Musk’s comments were made in response to advertisers pulling out from X after Musk expressed agreement with a social media post accused of promoting antisemitism. Several major companies, including Disney, Apple, IBM, Comcast, Warner Bros. Discovery, Paramount Global, and Lions Gate Entertainment, withdrew their ads from X in November.
Yaccarino, who took on the role of X’s CEO in May, has been working to bring advertisers back to the platform following Musk’s acquisition of the company in 2022. Musk apologized for his controversial comments during the interview, acknowledging a particular post as “one of the most foolish if not the most foolish thing I’ve ever done on the platform.” Yaccarino’s response reaffirms X’s commitment to providing a space for diverse voices and perspectives while acknowledging the challenges and controversies that may arise on the platform.
