Why does Jonathan Majors compare himself to Martin Luther King?

Jonathan Majors, known for his role as Kang the Conqueror in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has faced controversy and a domestic violence conviction. In his first interview since the conviction, he compared himself to the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Majors likened his current girlfriend, actress Meagan Good, to Coretta Scott King, the widow of Martin Luther King, Jr., during the interview with Good Morning America.

This comparison is not the first time Majors has invoked the King family name. During his domestic violence trial, a recording from 2022 was played in which he urged his then-girlfriend Grace Jabbari to live up to the standards of Coretta Scott King and Michelle Obama. Majors described himself as a great man doing great things for his culture and the world, much like Dr. King. In his recent interview, he defended the comparison, calling it an analogy of what he aspires to be, with figures like Obama and King as his reference points.

The interview attempted to provide insight into Majors’ perspective and aspirations, but the comparisons to Dr. King have been widely criticized as inappropriate and disconnected from the context of his domestic violence case. Majors admitted he did a terrible job trying to make his point. Following the conviction, reports suggest that Majors has been terminated from his role as Kang, although Marvel Studios has yet to officially confirm his removal, and speculation surrounds potential replacements for the role.
