‘What If…?’ Season 2 Episode 5 Recap

The fifth episode of Season 2 of Marvel’s “What If…?” continues the alternate timeline featuring Captain Carter (Hayley Atwell) and explores the aftermath of the cliffhanger from the previous season. The episode starts at the Battle of New York, showing the initial collaboration between Captain Carter and Black Widow (Natasha Romanoff) as they thwart Loki’s attack.

The narrative shifts to the cargo ship where Captain Carter and Natasha are investigating a crate, which unexpectedly contains the HYDRA Stomper suit designed for Steve Rogers (Josh Keaton), with Steve still inside. However, he’s unrecognizable, lacking any memory of their past. Peggy is furious at Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) for keeping Steve’s survival a secret, but Fury justifies it by suggesting the Red Room might be involved in Steve’s transformation.

Meanwhile, Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) serves as Secretary of State, and Steve, now operating the HYDRA Stomper, attacks Bucky during a meeting. Peggy intervenes, trying to stop Steve, leading to a high-flying confrontation where she eventually manages to temporarily subdue him. With Steve’s suit maintaining his appearance but also keeping him alive, Peggy decides to take him to the Red Room for answers.

Arriving at a secret KGB base in Sokovia, which formerly served as the Red Room training camp, Peggy, Natasha, and Steve prepare to infiltrate. However, they face numerous animatronics and face an unexpected attack from Natasha’s “sort of” mother, Melina Vostokoff (Rachel Weisz). The fight ensues, and Peggy, exhausted from the battle, confronts Steve, allowing him a chance to attack or spare her. Steve chooses to depart for the Red Room, leading to a showdown where Natasha thwarts Melina’s plan by causing the base’s destruction.

As the base collapses, Peggy is determined to find Steve, and the Watcher hints at more to come in Peggy’s story. Suddenly, a red light swallows Peggy, transporting her to a mysterious encounter with Nick Fury and Wanda Maximoff in an Elizabethan setting, hinting at a Marvel 1602 crossover.

This episode delves into an action-packed, emotionally charged storyline, exploring the relationship dynamics between the characters and introducing unexpected twists, setting the stage for future developments in the series.
