U.S. to send additional air defense system to Persian Gulf amid rising tensions in Middle East

As tensions worsens in the Middle East due to the escalating war between Israel and Hamas, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced late Saturday that the U.S. will deploy one of its strike groups to the Persian Gulf, along with another additional air defense systems to the regions.

Austin also said that he has put additional U.S. forces on ‘prepare to deploy’ order, but did not share how many. Earlier this week, he had ordered 2,000 troops to be prepared to deploy to the Middle East.

He also said that he has ordered a Patriot missile defense system battalions and Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) anti-missile battery, to the Persian Gulf as well.

In a statement, Austin stated that the recent development of deploying additional defense systems comes after his detailed interaction with President Joe Biden on “recent escalations by Iran and its proxy forces across the Middle East.”
