Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, better known by his stage as The Weeknd, is a popular Canadian musician who was born in Toronto, Ontario, on February 16, 1990. His parents were long-time residents of Canada who had immigrated from Ethiopia. Shortly after Tesfaye was born, his father remarried and began a new family. He seldom saw his father and had only ever overheard him remark having a passing familiarity with him.
His grandmother raised him in an Ethiopian Orthodox family, and he also learned Amharic, the native tongue of Ethiopia. He had a limited command of Amharic, but he quickly picked up French and became proficient in it. At the age of 17, Abel Makkonen Tesfaye dropped out of school and later developed a heroin addiction.
