The drama between Joe Biden and his ex-staffer Tara Reade explained

In April 2019, as Joe Biden prepared to announce his candidacy for the 2020 presidential election, allegations surfaced that cast a shadow over his campaign. Tara Reade, a former staff assistant, came forward with accusations of inappropriate behavior against Biden, dating back to 1993. Initially, Reade claimed Biden had touched her inappropriately, describing uncomfortable encounters where he would run his fingers up her neck. However, in March 2020, she escalated her claims, alleging that Biden had sexually assaulted her by penetrating her with his fingers.

Biden vehemently denied these allegations, asserting that they were unequivocally false. His campaign released statements emphasizing Biden’s dedication to combating violence against women and categorically refuting Reade’s accusations. Seeking to address the controversy directly, Biden appeared on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” in May 2020, reiterating his denial and calling for transparency by requesting access to any records Reade claimed to have filed against him.

Despite Biden’s efforts to confront the allegations, the situation remained mired in controversy. The National Archives, however, declined Biden’s request for access to any such records, prompting further scrutiny. Meanwhile, Reade maintained her stance, alleging that while she had filed a report, it only detailed harassment and not sexual assault. As conflicting accounts emerged and the media spotlight shifted, Biden ultimately won the 2020 election, and Reade’s accusations gradually faded from public attention.

However, the saga did not end there. In January 2024, Reade filed a lawsuit against the United States Department of Justice, alleging misconduct and seeking $10 million in damages. She claimed emotional distress and anxiety due to the FBI’s investigation into her allegations against Biden, alleging violations of her Fourth Amendment rights. In a subsequent interview, Reade discussed her decision to seek asylum in Russia and her plans to pursue legal action against the DOJ, signaling that the controversy surrounding her allegations continues to reverberate in Biden’s political career. As of May 2024, neither President Biden nor the DOJ has publicly responded to Reade’s lawsuit, leaving the unresolved drama a lingering aspect of Biden’s tenure.
