Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Scarlett Johansson opens up on returning to the MCU

The recent buzz around the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has sparked discussions and rumors about the potential return of some of its iconic stars, namely Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Scarlett Johansson, who exited their prominent roles in Avengers: Endgame.

Chris Evans, known for his portrayal of Captain America, addressed the possibility of returning during an appearance on The View. While he didn’t rule out a comeback, he emphasized his protective nature toward the character, stating that any return would have to feel right and be handled appropriately.

Scarlett Johansson, who portrayed Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow), teased a potential supernatural return during an appearance on TODAY. She joked about possibilities like a vampire or zombie version of her character, hinting at a potential secret project she might be involved in with Marvel as a producer. This involvement makes her the most likely of the three to consider a return.

Robert Downey Jr., famous for his role as Iron Man, has been notably dismissive about reprising his character. In a podcast interview in January 2020, he mentioned that a compelling argument and significant events would be required for a return. Additionally, a Marvel Studios producer confirmed in February 2023 that future appearances from Downey as Iron Man were no longer on the table, indicating that he had closed the door on that chapter of his career.

Overall, Johansson’s return seems plausible given her ongoing involvement with Marvel in a producing capacity. Evans might consider it under certain conditions, while Downey appears unlikely to reprise his role as Iron Man, given his statements and the indications from Marvel Studios. Nonetheless, in the unpredictable world of the MCU, where unexpected twists are common, fans can’t entirely rule out the possibility of an Avengers reunion down the line.
