The recent announcement confirms that Jeff Lebby, the current offensive coordinator at Oklahoma, will be assuming the role of head coach at Mississippi State, as officially declared by the school. Lebby brings with him an impressive resume, having served as an offensive coordinator at prominent programs such as OU, Ole Miss, and UCF, where he’s known for his high-tempo and prolific offensive strategies.

His tenure as coordinator for the Oklahoma offense since 2019 has seen remarkable success, marked by 14 instances of scoring 50 or more points, a stat that surpasses all active offensive coordinators in college football.

Reportedly, Lebby has agreed to a five-year deal, succeeding Zach Arnett, who served less than a full year as Mississippi State’s coach following the passing of Mike Leach. The athletic director, Zac Selmon, expressed confidence in Lebby, highlighting his anticipated impact on the football program, emphasizing an exciting style of play, development of student-athletes, and a culture of winning while maintaining high integrity.

Lebby’s appointment as head coach at Mississippi State marks the fifth full-time head coach since Dan Mullen’s departure for Florida after the 2017 season. Mullen’s tenure reset expectations at the school, propelling them to a No. 1 ranking in 2014 and breaking a 13-year bowl streak this year.

Having previously worked at Baylor from 2008 to 2016, Lebby has incorporated principles from Art Briles’ offensive system into his coaching philosophy, and his experience under influential offensive minds like Josh Heupel and Lane Kiffin further adds to his credibility.

The success of Oklahoma’s offense in 2023, ranking within the Top 6 nationally in total offense, scoring offense, and passing offense, underscores Lebby’s ability to orchestrate high-performing offensive units.

Acknowledging the challenges of coaching at Mississippi State within the competitive SEC, Lebby expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity and emphasized his dedication to integrating into the community, building relationships with players, and focusing on recruiting. He highlighted the school’s strong traditions and expressed excitement about contributing to the football program’s legacy.
