Nancy Meyers wrote and directed the 2009 American romance comedy It’s Complicated. Meryl Streep plays a bakery owner and single mother of three who, 10 years after their divorce, begins an illicit relationship with her ex-husband, played by Alec Baldwin. However, she finds herself drawn to another man: her architect, Adam (played by Steve Martin). Among others, Lake Bell, Hunter Parrish, Zoe Kazan, John Krasinski, Mary Kay Place, Robert Curtis Brown, and Rita Wilson all provide supporting roles to the movie.
Critics gave the movie mixed reviews, praising the ensemble cast’s talent but finding the plot to be very predictable. However, after its first release on Christmas Day 2009 in the US and Canada, it became yet another commercial success for Meyers. It had a good Christmas season and a strong start to 2010, finishing on April 1 with $112.7 million. It’s Complicated finally brought in $219.1 million worldwide, surpassing Meyer’s previous third-highest-grossing film, The Holiday (2006).
In the same year, the ensemble received a National Board of Review of Motion Pictures Award for Best Ensemble Cast for their contributions. Additionally, the movie received nominations for the Satellite Awards and the Critics’ Choice Awards, and Meyers received two nods for Golden Globes, including Best Screenplay and Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. At the Golden Globe and BAFTA award ceremonies, respectively, Streep and Baldwin received individual recognition in the form of Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor nominations.
