MCU Showrunner Discusses Potential Directorship of Future Guardians of the Galaxy Films!

Kirsten Lepore, the showrunner of the animated spinoff series “I Am Groot,” recently discussed the possibility of taking on future live-action Guardians of the Galaxy projects, particularly in light of James Gunn’s new role at DC Studios.

Lepore, who helms the animated series focused on baby Groot, has been mentioned as a potential candidate to continue Gunn’s work on the mainline Guardians of the Galaxy film franchise. The post-credit scene of the third film hints that some of the characters might return for another adventure.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter about the second season of “I Am Groot,” Lepore shared her perspective on the potential for live-action work while emphasizing her dedication to animation. She expressed her openness to live-action projects, explaining that while she once considered transitioning to live-action, she now feels more aligned with animation. Lepore emphasized her passion for animation and her comfort in that space, indicating a willingness to continue in animation indefinitely. However, she also expressed curiosity about experimenting with live-action.

Should another Guardians of the Galaxy project be in development, Lepore’s experience on the spinoff, especially working with Gunn in the first season, could be an asset in understanding the characters and the team’s dynamic. While Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is considered a satisfying conclusion to the trilogy, it doesn’t necessarily rule out the possibility of a new overarching storyline. The film hinted at Star-Lord’s return, leaving room for further exploration.

While many fans anticipate more from the franchise, a significant factor in the success of the films was the exceptional on-screen chemistry of the Guardians of the Galaxy cast, including Gunn. Gunn had a special rapport with the cast, bringing out their best performances. While it would be exciting to see fan-favourite characters in new adventures under a different directorial vision, it’s acknowledged that it won’t be quite the same without Gunn’s unique touch.

The Guardians of the Galaxy franchise is currently available for streaming on Disney Plus.
