Larian Studios’ CEO Swen Vincke has provided Xbox fans with a promising update on the progress of Baldur’s Gate 3 for the platform, addressing concerns about its release timeline for 2023. Following a successful Early Access period, the game received widespread acclaim upon its full launch on PC and PS5 this summer, breaking records on Steam and garnering high ratings.
However, the Xbox version faced delays due to Microsoft’s insistence on achieving parity between Series X and Series S versions, particularly in implementing a split-screen co-op feature. The development team has been diligently working to overcome this challenge. Vincke’s recent update reassures fans that active playtesting is underway to ensure smooth functioning and to identify and resolve any remaining bugs. While an exact release date is not yet provided, the target of 2023 remains in place.
This positive development aligns with the previous update from Larian Studios’ Director of Publishing, Michael Douse, who affirmed progress on the Xbox versions and expressed confidence in the 2023 launch. Fans have responded appreciatively, though many acknowledge that the wait remains the most challenging aspect.
In a separate context, leaked documents from the Activision Blizzard acquisition earlier this year revealed Microsoft’s initial skepticism towards Baldur’s Gate 3, dismissing it as a “second-run Stadia PC RPG” and questioning its value for Game Pass. Despite this, Michael Douse of Larian Studios responded diplomatically, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding the game’s reception and emphasizing the industry-wide uncertainty. Ultimately, the studio’s leap of faith was rewarded by the enthusiastic support of fans.
