The John Wick franchise, which began in 2014 as a low-budget action film starring Keanu Reeves, has since become a massive success both financially and critically. With four films released and an upcoming spin-off series, the franchise has only continued to grow in popularity. Each installment has outperformed its predecessor, a rarity in the film industry. However, despite this success, Reeves expressed a desire for his character, John Wick, to have a definitive ending in one of the films.
In an interview, franchise producer Basil Iwanyk revealed that Reeves was insistent on John Wick meeting a definitive end in one of the movies. Reeves wanted closure for the character, given the physical and emotional toll that making these action-packed films takes on him. Iwanyk explained that after the second, third, and fourth movies, Reeves would feel exhausted and drained. Recognizing this, the producers agreed to leave a small opening, about 10%, in case Reeves ever decided he wanted to revisit the character.
While it might disappoint some fans to hear that Reeves envisioned a definite end for John Wick, it’s a testament to the actor’s dedication to the role. He poured so much of himself into the franchise that it’s only natural he would seek a fitting conclusion for the character.
Iwanyk emphasized that if Reeves does return to the John Wick role, it will be done thoughtfully and with purpose. The producers want to ensure that any potential future installment is not forced, but instead adds value to the franchise. So while the likelihood of John Wick’s return remains uncertain, fans can rest assured that if it does happen, it will be done with care and consideration.
