In a heartfelt but somber announcement, celebrity couple Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner have revealed their decision to part ways after four years of marriage. The news comes as a surprise to fans, as the couple shares two young daughters and had been seen as a beloved Hollywood pair.
The divorce filing, made in Miami, Florida, was confirmed through court documents obtained by NBC News, which stated that “the marriage between the parties is irretrievably broken.” Despite the decision to divorce, the couple has a prenuptial agreement in place, details of which were disclosed in the filing.
The divorce proceedings were initiated by Jonas, 34, who submitted the documents to the Miami-Dade County Court on Tuesday. This move follows recent reports of the couple’s sale of their house in the vicinity.
While the news of the divorce filing has saddened fans, it marks a significant turning point in the relationship between Jonas, a member of the famous Jonas Brothers band, and Turner, the former “Game of Thrones” star.
The couple’s love story began in 2016 when they first connected through Instagram, with Jonas sending Turner a direct message. Reflecting on their initial interaction, Turner shared in a 2019 interview with Harper’s Bazaar UK, “We had a lot of mutual friends, and they’d been trying to introduce us for a long time. We were following each other on Instagram, and he direct-messaged me one fine day, out of the blue.”
Their connection quickly deepened, leading to their engagement in October 2017. Turner expressed her happiness about their relationship in an interview with Marie Claire in 2018, describing being engaged to Jonas as “lovely” and stating that she had found her “person.”
In 2019, the couple celebrated their love with two weddings: a spontaneous ceremony in Las Vegas on May 1, immediately following the Billboard Music Awards, and a more formal affair in France on June 29, surrounded by close family and friends at Le Château de Tourreau in Sarrians. The lovebirds welcomed their first child, Willa, in July 2020, and a year later, they joyfully announced their second pregnancy.
Jonas expressed his excitement about fatherhood to PEOPLE, saying, “You really don’t know what to expect. I think [I’m] maybe a little less nervous [this time], but I’m just excited. It’s such an amazing part of life.” He spoke of being a dad as an “amazing” experience and looked forward to the future.
In July 2022, the couple welcomed their second daughter, D., into the world, further cementing their family bond.
The announcement of their divorce filing came shortly after PEOPLE reported that Jonas had enlisted the services of a divorce lawyer. Observers also noted that he had continued wearing his wedding ring during a performance in Austin, Texas. However, in recent weeks, Jonas was seen without his wedding ring.
Despite their decision to part ways, Turner showed her support for Jonas by attending the group’s performance in New York City last month, highlighting their commitment to maintaining a positive relationship for the sake of their children and the respect they share for each other.
