Jaw-dropping 256-core CPU will debut in 2025 as Arm partner turns heat up on AMD and Nvidia — Ampere conspicuously leaves Intel out of equation as it claims CPU leadership ahead of Epyc


Ampere, having made waves with its groundbreaking AmpereOne processor debut in 2023, is gearing up for another milestone in 2025 with the announcement of an updated version, poised to redefine the industry standard yet again.

During the company’s annual Strategy & Roadmap Update video, Ampere unveiled its ambitious plans for the future, shedding light on the next generation of AmpereOne processors. This upcoming iteration will be fabricated on a cutting-edge 3nm process node, a significant advancement from its predecessor’s 5nm architecture. The AmpereOne 2025 edition is projected to feature up to 256 cores and boast 12-channel DDR5 memory, showcasing Ampere’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of CPU performance and efficiency.

Renée James, Founder and CEO of Ampere, emphasized the company’s strategic focus on addressing the evolving landscape of AI computing. Acknowledging the current hype surrounding AI and the resultant surge in GPU demand, James highlighted Ampere’s efforts to develop products tailored for the next phase of AI compute, characterized by a more balanced and sustainable approach.


Ampere’s upcoming 256-core CPU promises a staggering 40 percent increase in performance compared to any other CPU in the market. However, Ampere’s innovation extends beyond core count, with a slew of new features aimed at enhancing efficiency in performance, memory management, caching, and AI compute. Remarkably, the future chip will utilize the same air-cooled thermal solution as its predecessor, ensuring seamless integration and compatibility.

In its bid to assert dominance in AI inference, Ampere has partnered with Qualcomm to collaborate on a joint solution utilizing Qualcomm’s Cloud AI 100. Ampere’s AmpereOne processors have demonstrated superior performance per watt compared to competitors like AMD’s EPYC “Bergamo”, positioning Ampere as a formidable force in the realm of AI computing.
