Who could have predicted in 2023 that we would find ourselves eagerly anticipating a Game of Thrones spin-off? Certainly not me. However, it’s impossible to deny that HBO delivered a spectacular show with House of the Dragon.

Set in an era preceding the events of Game of Thrones, the series delves into the history of the illustrious House of the Dragon, well before the Targaryen lineage was pruned by the actions of Robert Baratheon. Often affectionately referred to as HOtD by devoted fans, the narrative centres around the riveting struggle for power between Rhaenyra Targaryen and Aegon II Targaryen, both vying for the coveted Iron Throne and leaving Westeros in turmoil.

The inaugural season undeniably stood out as one of the finest television series of 2023, leaving viewers eager to witness the return of their beloved House of the Dragon characters to the small screen. The burning question on everyone’s mind remains: when can we expect the release of House of the Dragon Season 2?

Will there be a House of the Dragon season 2?

The highly anticipated House of the Dragon Season 2 received its official announcement on August 26, 2022, following a staggering viewership of 10 million for its inaugural episode.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Francesca Orsi, HBO’s esteemed executive vice president of programming, expressed her profound satisfaction with the resounding success of the show. She commended the dedicated House of the Dragon team for their remarkable achievement.

“Our phenomenal cast and crew undertook a massive challenge and exceeded all expectations, delivering a show that has already established itself as must-see-TV,” she said. “A huge thank you to [co-creator and executive producer George R.R. Martin and co-creator and showrunners Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik] for leading us on this journey. We couldn’t be more excited to continue bringing to life the epic saga of House Targaryen with season two.”

When will House of the Dragon season 2 be released?

House of the Dragon enthusiasts can mark their calendars for the highly anticipated Season 2, slated for release in the late spring or early summer of 2024, with a probable launch in July or August.

This time frame was revealed by HBO’s chief content officer, Casey Bloys, in an interview with Variety. Bloys mentioned that House of the Dragon Season 2 wouldn’t be eligible for the 2024 Emmy Awards, considering the May 31, 2024, deadline, indicating that HBO anticipates a release after the awards season.

Fans need not worry about potential delays caused by ongoing industrial actions. The scripts were completed prior to the Writer’s Strike, and since the show’s filming occurs outside the United States, it remains unaffected by the SAG strikes.

Excitingly, production for House of the Dragon Season 2 kicked off on March 6, 2023, as confirmed by the Film & Television Industry Alliance’s Production List. Filming spanned across the summer in the picturesque landscapes of the UK and Spain.

Sources closely tied to the production have disclosed that, as of September 2023, location shooting has successfully wrapped up, leaving only a month of studio filming to complete. On September 27, Variety reported that House of the Dragon Season 2 “was able to wrap filming on Season 2 during the strikes,” indicating an impressive milestone in the show’s production journey.
