Director Michael Chaves provides an update on The Conjuring 4 following The Nun II’s post-credits sequence, with the most recent instalment in the franchise hinting at its future. Chaves returns to the James Wan-produced franchise with the follow-up to the 2018 popular spinoff. Chaves previously directed the loosely linked The Curse of La Llorona and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. Taissa Farmiga as Sister Irene and Bonnie Aarons as the titular demon Valak, who commits a string of murders of priests and nuns around Europe in quest of a potent artefact, both make their return in The Nun II.

SlashFilm met up with Michael Chaves to discuss The Nun II in advance of the film’s debut. The franchise director responded that writing is still ongoing for the fourth mainline movie and acknowledged that “it could go a couple different ways,” but expressed his excitement for it and hinted there is “a great finale” planned for it when asked about the movie’s post-credits scene and how it sets up the in-development The Conjuring: The Last Rites. Below is what Chaves revealed:

I think that they’re still writing it. They’re still working on it. There’s definitely “Conjuring: Last Rites” is coming. And in terms of the exorcism of Maurice, that’s always been a center, a cornerstone marker in the timeline and I think it’s up to interpretation. It’s also, I think there’s a lot of things that need to align, so it could go a couple different ways. As an audience member, I would 100% see [a crossover of all Conjuring demons]. I couldn’t give away what I know about what’s being developed, but I know that they’re going to end with a bang. I know that there is a great finale being planned for “Last Rites” and as to what or who’s in it … I don’t want to give away any spoilers.

How The Nun 2’s Post-Credits Sets Up The Conjuring 4

Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are back as Ed and Lorraine Warren at their house when they receive a call from Steve Coulter’s Father Gordon in The Nun II’s post-credits sequence, which appears in the middle of the eerie credits made out of archive video and scenes from the sequel. Judy, their daughter, answers the phone and informs them that Gordon is phoning for an emergency, the details of which are not made clear.

At first look, viewers are led to believe that this is a flashback setting up the Warrens’ ultimate exorcism of Jonas Bloquet’s Frenchie, which would reveal the frightening menace of Valak to the paranormal investigation team. Although the Judy shown in the sequence appears to be performed by Sterling Jerins, it is confirmed to be the adolescent version of the Warrens’ daughter and therefore takes place much later than the exorcism seen at the start of the first Conjuring.
