Did Julia Roberts and Kevin Bacon ever work together?

In the nostalgic embrace of the recent Netflix hit, Leave the World Behind, the ’90s surged back to life, rekindling memories of mom jeans, hypercolor shirts, and the limited world of the original 151 Pokémon. The on-screen reunion of Julia Roberts and Kevin Bacon brought forth questions among viewers about their prior collaborations during that era, evoking a journey down memory lane through a decade marked by its distinctive cultural references.

During the ’90s, Roberts and Bacon previously shared the screen in a film that remains a curious relic of that time: Flatliners. Directed by Joel Schumacher, best known for his varied filmography including the controversial Batman and Robin, this movie, despite not being based on a Stephen King short story, featured an ensemble cast, notably including Kiefer Sutherland, Oliver Platt, and Billy Baldwin, among others.

The plot revolves around a group of medical students who conduct an experiment to explore the unknown realm beyond death. Their risky endeavor involves deliberately inducing temporary death and resuscitating each other at the brink of fatality to experience the afterlife. Predictably, this reckless pursuit of knowledge and the supernatural results in eerie consequences as they encounter inexplicable and unsettling occurrences upon their return to the living.

Upon its release in 1990, Flatliners did not soar at the box office, earning moderately over its budget. Critics also held mixed opinions, leading to a lukewarm reception. Despite its initial reception, the film garnered a cult following over time, remaining somewhat obscure despite featuring some of Hollywood’s notable stars.

Decades later, in 2017, a soft remake/sequel of Flatliners emerged, attempting to revive the concept for a new audience. Led by Elliot Page and Diego Luna, the film aimed to capitalize on the brand recognition of the original. Despite the return of Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, and other key stars were notably absent from this iteration. The attempt to reignite the Flatliners legacy fell short, failing to replicate the success of its predecessor at the box office and leaving the enduring mystique of the original largely untouched.
