Tara Strong’s career as a voice actress has been nothing short of remarkable. It commenced at the tender age of 13 with her portrayal of Hello Kitty, and since then, she’s breathed life into numerous iconic characters. Her latest addition to this illustrious roster was in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) series “Loki,” where she played the cheerful Texan cartoon timepiece, Miss Minutes, in the first season. Her return for the second season is currently underway on Disney Plus.
However, what should have been a triumphant homecoming to the Marvel universe has been eclipsed by a vocal backlash on social media. This came in the wake of Strong expressing her pro-Israel stance after the Hamas attack. Regrettably, this controversy has already led to her removal from an upcoming project. This development raises the question of whether her tenure as Miss Minutes in the MCU might also be in jeopardy.
It’s come to light that Tara Strong has been replaced in the forthcoming noir-themed adult animation series, “Boxtown.” Despite being initially cast as the lead character, Bill the Orphan, opposite Gravity Falls creator and voice actor Alex Hirsch, Strong has now been let go from the show, with no official explanation provided. The timing strongly implies a response to the ongoing controversy.
Although losing “Boxtown” may not be a substantial setback for Strong, given her prolific body of work, it could potentially become problematic if it marks the beginning of a series of recasts and lost opportunities. The course of action Marvel takes regarding Strong as Miss Minutes may establish a precedent for how similar situations are handled.
In all likelihood, Marvel is unlikely to sever ties with Strong over this matter. After all, “Loki” season 2 also features Jonathan Majors, who is embroiled in an ongoing domestic violence trial, a situation that has understandably generated considerable public attention. Yet, Majors continues to be a part of the MCU, portraying Kang the Conqueror, the central antagonist of the entire Multiverse Saga.
Given the higher visibility of Majors’ controversy compared to Strong’s, it’s reasonable to assume that she will likely not be replaced as Miss Minutes for the third season of “Loki” (which seems highly probable). This is especially the case since Strong has solidified her partnership with Marvel by taking over the role of Mainframe in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” from Miley Cyrus. Therefore, the decision to retain or replace Strong may serve as a guideline for other creators and studios facing similar situations, whether they choose to align with Marvel’s approach or follow the course set by “Boxtown.”
