A wristwatch that landed Hollywood icon Arnold Schwarzenegger in a brief detainment at Munich Airport has fetched an impressive €270,000 ($294,000) after being auctioned off at a charity dinner for the Schwarzenegger Climate Initiative in Austria.

The high-profile event, attended by influential figures in climate action, including US Climate Envoy John Kerry, raised a total of €1.31 million. Apart from the controversial timepiece, art pieces and unique jewelry were also auctioned during the gala.

In a heartfelt address during the dinner, Schwarzenegger acknowledged the progress made in the fight against pollution. “Today, so many people are here to be part of the solution,” he said, expressing gratitude to those supporting his environmental initiatives.

However, Schwarzenegger’s charitable efforts come amid a legal dispute. The actor is facing criminal tax proceedings for failing to declare the Audemars Piguet watch to customs officers in Munich after arriving on a flight from Los Angeles.

Thomas Meister, a press officer from Munich Customs, emphasized that the failure to declare the imported watch is a standard procedure that applies to everyone. Schwarzenegger was held for over two hours but was subsequently released.

In an attempt to resolve the issue, Schwarzenegger agreed to pre-pay potential taxes on the watch. However, a source close to the actor revealed that officers struggled for over an hour to get a credit card machine to work. Faced with technical difficulties, they eventually escorted him to a bank, where he was asked to withdraw cash from an ATM to settle the pre-paid taxes.

Complications arose when the ATM had a withdrawal limit that was too low, and the bank was closed. Upon his return, a new officer brought a functional credit card machine, allowing Schwarzenegger to pre-pay the taxes and conclude the incident.

Despite the detention hiccup, the auctioned watch’s substantial contribution to the charity event underscores the ongoing commitment of Schwarzenegger and his supporters to environmental causes, emphasizing the importance of collective efforts in combating climate change.
