The iPhone 16 is still several months away from its expected release in the fall, but there have already been numerous leaks providing insights into what to expect from the new lineup. Anticipated changes include design updates, new color options, larger batteries for the Pro Max model, and more.

The latest information comes from a leaker on Weibo, supporting Ming-Chi Kuo’s early-year predictions about camera enhancements for the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max. According to the leak, the iPhone 16 Pro will feature a Sony IMX803 main camera sensor, identical to the one used in the iPhone 15 Pro, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max will be equipped with a more advanced IMX903 sensor.

Additionally, both the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max are expected to have upgraded 48-megapixel ultrawide cameras, a significant increase from the 12MP ultrawide cameras on the iPhone 15 Pro models. This improvement is anticipated to result in a higher megapixel count and a larger sensor size, though it may reduce pixel size from 1 micron on the iPhone 15 Pro’s 12MP sensor to 0.7 microns on the iPhone 16 Pro’s 48MP sensor.

Despite the smaller pixel size, performance should remain strong due to “pixel binning” technology, which combines adjacent pixels to create a “superpixel,” producing more detailed images. It is expected that this technology will be present in the iPhone 16.

For the telephoto cameras, the iPhone 16 Pro Max is likely to retain the 5x telephoto camera from the previous generation. However, the rear camera array layout may change significantly, adopting a vertical pill-like design reminiscent of the iPhone X. This aligns with previous reports about the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max camera improvements.

Kuo also hinted at an upgrade to the selfie camera, possibly for the iPhone 17 in 2025, which might feature a 24MP front sensor, doubling the current 12MP resolution. Given Kuo’s track record, his predictions are credible.

Other recent leaks suggest a new battery cell with enhanced energy density and a protective shell, alongside a significant redesign for the iPhone 16, including a size increase for the Pro Max, a larger Action Button, and a new Capture Button. With summer approaching, more leaks and news about the iPhone 16 are expected before Apple’s likely fall event.
