2023 Sales Data Comparison: PS5 vs. Xbox Series X/S Reveals Significant Performance Difference


In the ongoing battle of console sales between the PlayStation 5 (PS5) and the Xbox Series X/S, the PS5 continues to dominate, outselling its Xbox counterpart by a significant margin. This year, the PS5 saw record-breaking sales figures, while the Xbox Series X/S lagged behind.

The PS5’s success has been largely attributed to its lineup of exclusive games, such as Final Fantasy 16 and Spider-Man 2. Sony’s focus on delivering high-quality AAA single-player experiences exclusive to PlayStation consoles has evidently paid off. Major titles like Baldur’s Gate 3 also enjoyed brief periods of console exclusivity on the PS5, further contributing to its popularity.

According to data gathered by Ampere Analysis and reported by the Financial Times, the PS5 sold a remarkable 22.5 million units in the year, marking a 65% increase from the previous year. In contrast, the Xbox Series X/S combined sold 7.6 million units, trailing far behind the PS5 in terms of sales. Additionally, the Nintendo Switch, despite being close to its successor’s potential release, managed to sell an impressive 16.4 million units in this period.


The holiday shopping season, including events like Black Friday, has further fueled the PS5’s sales momentum, positioning Sony well to achieve its ambitious goal of selling 25 million units by the end of the company’s fiscal year on March 31, 2024. If this trajectory continues, the PS5 is on track to surpass the sales figures of its highly successful predecessor, the PS4.

However, while Sony celebrates its success, it’s worth noting that Microsoft measures success differently for its Xbox brand. Xbox chief Phil Spencer emphasizes the importance of services like Game Pass over sheer console sales numbers. Microsoft’s strategy involves prioritizing services and offering value to gamers through initiatives like Game Pass. With the recent acquisitions of Activision Blizzard and Bethesda, Xbox Game Pass aims to strengthen its subscription service by featuring popular titles from these gaming giants, possibly including franchises like Call of Duty.

While the PS5’s sales dominance is undeniable, Microsoft’s focus on service offerings like Game Pass and its recent acquisitions signal a shift towards a different approach to engage and retain gamers, indicating an evolving landscape in the console gaming industry.
